Alaska's mining industry brings a broad range of benefits to the state, supporting over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in both urban and rural Alaska, as well as generating significant local government tax payments - helping support local communities state-wide.

Alaska is home to an abundance of untapped strategic and critical minerals capable of meeting our nation's vast manufacturing and national security needs, including zinc, lead, gold, silver, coal, as well as minerals essential to the construction industry such as sand and gravel. However, the lack of a clear national mining policy prevents Alaska's mining industry from tapping many of these abundant resources, leaving our nation's manufacturing supply chain largely dependent on foreign resources.

Given Alaska's mineral wealth, Alaskans need to promote policies that will revitalize our nation's production of strategic and critical minerals and bring economic growth to the state.

Take Action and urge your representative to support Rep. Mark Amodei of Nevada’s "National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act of 2012 (H.R. 4402)," a bill that will revitalize domestic production of strategic and critical minerals by reforming an outdated and incredibly inefficient permitting process on American mining projects. This bill will drive new investments in American minerals and prevent the U.S. from becoming further dependent on foreign sources for these vital minerals.

Dear Representative:

I am writing to urge you to support H.R. 4402, the "The National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act of 2012," sponsored by Rep. Mark Amodei of Nevada and designed to revitalize the nation's critical minerals supply chain. This legislation would drive investment in a critical American industry that is currently held back by massive delays to production because of an overly burdensome regulatory and permitting process.

The U.S. is home to an abundance of untapped strategic and critical minerals capable of helping meet our nation's vast manufacturing and national security needs. Yet the current permitting process prevents American companies from utilizing many of these abundant resources, leaving our nation's manufacturing supply chain often dependent on foreign resources from countries like China, which currently controls 97% of the world's rare earth supply.

American mineral and metal mining supports hundreds of thousands of high-paying jobs and provides domestic manufacturers with a reliable supply of critically important raw materials and commodities that can help re-build America’s economy. It's time for America to start creating mining jobs instead of destroying them and start producing more of these critical minerals right here at home.

H.R. 4402 would help inject new life into this critical American industry, by requiring the Department of the Interior and the Department of Agriculture to more efficiently develop domestic sources of strategic and critical minerals, including rare earth elements. Currently, it can take up to ten years for agencies to issue permits to allow mineral mining work to begin; the bill will limit the total review process for issuing permits to 30 months unless signatories to the permitting timeline agree to an extension.

I urge you to co-sponsor the "The National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act of 2012" and in doing so, help revitalize domestic production of minerals and prevent the U.S. from becoming further dependent on foreign sources of these critical resources.
